Compact city cars are very popular, (referred to as the B-SUV, accounting for some
22% of total Irish car sales), their main attributes manifesting in their ability to carry
people, cope with traffic and not cost a fortune to run. Having won many hearts and
driveways over the past three years, Kia have now added the boxy-looking, (seen on
the EV5 and REV9), EV2 to their motor-menu, and on an initial launch drive,
showed me enough of its considerable talents to both warrant a longer association
and recommend same to any commuter, or family buyer.
Entering this segment, The Kia EV2 needs to hit the ground a full gallop, such is the
quite frantic growth of 37% year on year. The EV2 line-up starts from €28,660 or
€182 per month thanks to a 0% finance launch offer.
Designed, engineered and produced in Europe, the EV2 comes with oodles of tech,
carries Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and is available as a five-seater
in Ireland. It comes with a choice of a 42.2-kWh standard-range battery or a 61.0-
kWh long-range battery option, with the ability to put up to 453 kilometres in your
mirrors.
The EV2 is built on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), all variants of
the EV2 powered by a single front-mounted electric motor. With the standard-range
battery pack, the electric motor applies 107.5kW (144bhp) through the front wheels
while the larger long-range battery pack is paired with a slightly detuned front
motor, which applies 99.5kW (133bhp), both power units delivering 250Nm of
torque, also through the front wheels. All EV2 variants produce 250Nm torque. Both
battery options operate on a 400V architecture. Under optimal conditions, DC fast
charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes approximately 29 minutes for the standard-
range version and around 30 minutes for the long-range model.
Vertical daytime running lights and the latest Star-map Signature Lighting establish
a clear family resemblance to the wider Kia EV range. It has a pronounced shoulder
line and robust wheel arches emphasising its structural strength.
The EV2 offers Kia’s latest triple-screen connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC)
system, integrating a 12.3-inch driver cluster, 12.3-inch central touchscreen, and 5.3-
inch climate control display. It also introduces ccNC Lite, which mirrors the layout
and core functionality of ccNC at a lower price point. Both systems support over-the-
air (OTA) updates and Kia Upgrades.
Safety and driving assistance are well overseen on the EV2 via a comprehensive suite
of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) more often found in higher segments
and includes features such as; blind-spot collision avoidance, lane keep assist and
front collision avoidance assist 2.0 standard on all models.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) calibration and dedicated Snow Mode contribute
to neutral handling in low and high-speed manoeuvres too. Noise, Vibration, and
Harshness (NVH) measures reflect European driving conditions and customer
expectations which include dedicated carpets, wheelhouse absorbers, and specific
tyres to reduce road noise.
Laminated door glass (on GT-Line models) and windscreen glass reduces wind
intrusion at motorway speeds while additional sound package components to the
inner dash, the frunk, the suspension, and the underbody cover mitigate high-
frequency tonal noise from electric powertrain components.
The EV2 is available in four different trim levels: Air, Earth, GT-Line and GT-Line
Plus.
