Reviews: VW V6 Amorak – The Happy Hauler

Last Word First

There is no getting away from the fact that VW’s Amorak is a work vehicle.  The 2017 V6 Amarok puts more pleasure into work than might be permissible – shuuuush!

It is big, strong and demands respect in tight spaces on one side and then on the other it is so well spoken, so well put together, so well behaved and now with a gem of a V6, 3-litre turbo-diesel, you can take it into any company.

Having had the pleasure of crossing the US many times, I am totally au fait with ‘Trucks’ and without hesitation would have one if I lived there – cool, cool, cool. Here our taxation system makes them expensive and being commercials attract buys with the ability to reclaim the VAT. This VW truck is very impressive and carries everything we have come to expect from its build quality to the level of trim and its liveability.

My test Amorak came in Highline trim and was shifted through a slick DSG, 8-sppeed automatic. Priced on the north side of 52k, it drives appreciably well for a weighty commercial, can carry a Euro-pallet in the rear, (2.5 square metres), with room for five, it will appeal to many, but bought by the few – the rest of us will applaud the decision. Loved it.

Outside View

Hard to believe that the Amarok is with us seven years, the first of its 2-litre TDI’s impressing from day one. This latest model stands 1,834mm tall, 1,954mm wide (2,228mm including mirrors), 5,254mm in length and has a gross vehicle weight of 3,290kg. It manages through all this to look unmistakably like a Volkswagen, my Highline coming with nice DRL’s (Daytime Running Lights), bi-xenon headlights, either side of a chrome two-bar grill, with the VW logo centre and proud, a V6 badge casually planted on the side to denote your potential.

Inside Story

Think of sitting into a VW passenger Golf and you will feel right at home inside the Amarok. Gone is the starkness of commercials from years past, the current range of crew-cabs offering comfort and safety features taken for granted in the passenger car world - cruise control, Apple Car Play, leather and a reversing camera are among its offerings.

Clean design, the interior of the Amarok carries all the functionality expected. Attaining a good driving position is easy and reminds you that you are driving a vehicle of substance – this is no lightweight and now with a very suitable 3-litre V6 for propulsion, the Amorak delivers on the road, moving easily through traffic and responding to throttle demand with commendable enthusiasm.

Like all crew-cabs, the Amarok requires respect on slow corners to avoid it getting somewhat squirrely and with a healthy and willing 224bhp at your behest, it is best to keep things smooth and positive. The driving reward is surprisingly good and while not exactly on a par with a similar sized SUV, it is very acceptable for a work vehicle.

Fitting the V6, 3-litre TDi to the Amarok, added to the cosmetic exterior changes and modern interior, elevates it to a level of function and desirability that deserves a place in your farmyard and five-star golf club, where it will be equally at home in both.
