The new front wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz B-Class has been launched on the Irish market, coming with an improved range of standard specifications and an entry-level price that is 11 percent lower than the model it replaces.
It has a reduced height, lower centre of gravity, generous interior space and high standard of safety. The electromechanical steering has been redesigned, a new four-link rear axle and upgraded electronic stability system is fitted.
Internally all is good with quality feel and space for 5. Those behind the leather-clad steering wheel get a good driving position, supportive driving seat and oodles of headroom. The centre console’s chrome surround info panel will visually delight the iPad generation.
The level 109bhp B180 CDI is likely to account for the bulk of B-Class sales in Ireland, is priced at €29.330 (ex works, annual road tax €160) , and like all B-Class models comes standard with an ECO start/stop function. The price of a second four-cylinder, 2.0/136bhp diesel, with common rail and direct-injection, will be announced later.
The introductory petrol model is the 122bhp B180BlueEFFICIENCY, priced at €29,890 (ex works, road tax of €225 per annum). A 2.0-litre/156bhp BlueEFFICIENCY version will be added to the range at a later date, the price of which will be announced at the time.
A short drive in the new B-Class, fitted with the optional 7G dual clutch transmission, was enough to see and feel the improvements on the model it replaces. Families, especially those with ‘activities’ will delight in the space, practicality and quality available. With its column gear change akin to its bigger siblings, the B-Class is smooth and easy, unfussy company, particularly in for anyone doing the unban commute.
Safety features on board the new B-Class include adaptive headlamp, blind spot, lane keeping and speed limit assist systems along with parking assist, hill hold brake function, reversing camera and distance control. There is also as standard a radar-based collision detection system that should avoid those rear end bumps.
